What to avoid in historical biopics, both of which can be found in Jonathan Teplitzky’s Churchill: style-less point-and-shoot cinematography, and sappily EMOTIONAL music underscoring DRAMATIC monologues.

The most memorable part is hands-down the unexpected homoeroticism in Chuchill’s tête-à-tête with the King. It reminds me of – but pales in comparison to – FDR’s hand-job in Hyde Park on Hudson.

I’ll leave you with the question I was pondering while walking out of the theatre: has John Slattery ever played a role other than Roger Sterling, either before or after Mad Men?
