What’s wrong with this picture:
The Academy Awards has two categories devoted to recognizing achievements in music; meanwhile, the Tony Awards — where half the categories are dedicated exclusively to musicals — also has only two categories focused specifically on music.
Da fuq?
The trendy solution to this predicament suggests splitting the Tony’s Best Score into Best Music and Best Lyrics…
But how about taking a page out of the Oscars’ Best Song book and adding a Best Showtune category!
As a cuck for Broadway history, I would salivate to see a list of which songs over the years the industry has deemed to be THE pinnacle of each musical season in the moment, weighing popularity against artistry. Do voters consider which might be revered forever, versus which captured the fleeting Zeitgeist of that year? And then there are the questions of whether voters would evaluate based on the song’s writing as an individual unit, or how its used in the context of the show, or the staging of the musical number, or the acting performances, or or or or or!
And having each nominated song performed on the broadcast?
Seems like a no brainer to this loser.
