Next spring’s Broadway production of Mary Jane will be a double rarity.
The obvious rarefied air Amy Herzog’s Pulitzer-finalist will occupy: a bonafide CELEBRITY!!! — Rachel McAdams — agreeing to star in a NEW!!! play on BROADWAY!!! (luminaries tend to stick to the canon).
Granted, Mary Jane technically won’t be a world premiere, a fact that allows for the second rarity:
It first played New York in 2017, courtesy of New York Theatre Workshop, starring Carrie Coon. Now, Coon’s nowhere near as famous as Rachel McAdams … but being able to see two actors of their respective statures tackle the SAME role in a NEW play for the SAME director — Anne Kauffman — within a span of 7 years?!
A gift of high-profile juxtaposition.
Even if McAdams pulls a Julia Roberts.
