Semantics Matter

What do you call the bar that separates adjacent seats in a theater?

“Armrest” is technically a correct answer . . . even though resting your arm on one could be incorrect etiquette, depending on the architecture.

When two occupied seats share one single solitary armrest, neither person should rest their arm atop it. If there’s not enough room for two arms, then fighting over which will reign supreme is a recipe for unfairness. If you feel compelled to LIGHTLY lay your body weight to one side, ONLY use the inside portion of the armrest.

In these situations, the term “armrest” is misleading nomenclature; as such, what if we all agree to strike the term from our collective lexicon, and instead go with seat dividers?
