Non-Narrative Narratives

2024 will belong to Bertrand Bonello.

At least in my niche book.

I’ve seen his two upcoming movies — The Beast and Coma — and they feel like a two-pronged experiment with a similarly-formalistic narrative structure.

Instead of focusing on developing one primary story, both movies mosey between a mosaic of narrative strands, all existing in their own interconnected reality, each defined by a different genre/period in The Beast, and a different mode of modern filmmaking— think: contemporary forms of the moving image beyond the movies — in Coma.

And they bounce around these narrative strands according to a logic that transcends plot.
