If you ask me why a title was chosen to be the primary label for a piece of art, I can scrounge together too many connections between the titular word/phrase and the art’s content.
Even when dealing with a one-word title, a single word can still have multiple definitions, allowing an inquiring (pedantic?) mind to consider how the art relates to each of these different definitions.
Two new(ish) plays add a further wrinkle to this endless rabbit hole, in a way that can be boiled down to a simple question…
How would you pronounce these titles: Appropriate (now on Broadway), and Job (now at the Connelly Theater)?
Is it “appropri-it” or “appropri-8”?
Is it “jawb” or “johb”?
When mulling the relationship between title and art, such titular heteronyms multiply the sheer number of interpretative possibilities.
