Mask Off

Shifting aspect ratios during a movie has become all the rage nowadays.

Setting aside the technology-forced shifts of IMAX cameras (and the like), a lot of movies alternate between different aspect ratios for artistic reasons.

My only quibble with this trend: it guarantees that some sequences have unsightly black bars hogging up a portion of the onscreen image.

Befitting both Harmony Korine’s career and his new movie, Aggro Dr1ft applies trollish dimensions to this trend: there are big black-bars on both sides of the image for the entire movie…until the closing credits, when the image finally fills the whole screen.

Why inflict this black-bars sandwich on the audience for most of the movie’s duration?

Well, “Why?” is Aggro Dr1ft’s trollish ethos.
