Here Lies Cabaret

What binds this Broadway season’s productions of Here Lies Love and Cabaret?

The obvious answer: they required a literal restructuring of their respective theaters, reorienting the audience’s conventionally seated positioning to a proscenium stage.

Relatedly, both musicals explore the relationship between entertainment, authoritarianism, spectacle, artistic (counter?)culture, and treating the audience as a representation of the populace.

P.S. Eddie Redmayne’s Emcee goes full Jupiter Ascending.
