Dance First is the latest example of an in-movie title card not matching the advertised title.
Which of the two should count as the official title??
All of Dance First’s promotional materials list the title as Dance First…but the title card that ends the actual movie reads:
Dance First
Think Later
So is the title Dance First, or Dance First Think Later??
A thematic explanation for this dissonance, related to the phrase’s origin as a Samuel Beckett quote, the subject of this here titularly-ambiguous bio-pic: the duration of the movie depicts the proverbial dancing, and after the concluding title card, it’s time for the audience to think about the dance they’ve just witnessed?
Samuel Beckett, a titan of theater…yet is the man behind the pen falling into the same obscurity that awaits the vast majority of writers? Dance First — or is it Dance First Think Later?? — rages against the dying of Beckett’s light, as did Bill Irwin’s recent On Beckett.
An early text card labels the movie as “A Life of Samuel Beckett” — which is true to his belief in multitudinous identities.
