For the Cause

The very first image we see in Strange Darling is this text card:

“Shot entirely on 35mm film.”

Given the garish stylistic flourishes that accompany this PSA — welcome to the aesthetic world of Strange Darling — I imagine the powers-that-be chose this proud introduction as a way to promote shooting on film.

If that’s the case, then it should’ve been the first text card of the closing credits, because how much of the audience will forget about that initial factoid 90 minutes later??

The only justification for placing it at the start: if knowing up front that Strange Darling is shot on 35mm meaningfully changes how we engage with its content…

Does it?
