The Gutter resides on the lowest-fi end of the Blackening/Wayans “studio comedy” spectrum.
The title all but answers the question: “Where is the movie’s humor located?”

For as much as Susan Sarandon is seen as a prestigious actor, she’s devoted much of her recent career to silver-screen silliness.
One final observation:
You know how it’s customary in closing credits to put a picture of the actors next to their names? The Gutter takes it one step further, by inserting behind-the-scenes shots of the director, screenwriter, cinematographer, editor, composer, etc. next to their names.
