“IT WAS ALL A DREAM” can be a hacky copout of an ending, but in the case of Robert O’Hara’s new play, does it really change what we’ve witnessed?
Shit. Meet. Fan.’s twist contextualizes what’s come before as a fantastical hypothetical, imagining what would happen if the concealed parts of the characters’ lives were revealed to each other over the course of one explosive cocktail party.
But the production’s final moment confirms that the secrets unearthed in the depicted hypothetical still exist in the characters’ actual reality, but they’re back to being hidden again.
Which means:
The characters have returned to relationships predicated on lies, but now none the wiser to each other’s true selves.
