Is Wonderful World Broadway’s crossing-the-Rubicon moment for the use of projections?
What I’m about to say is reductive, with nonlinear exceptions aplenty, but generally speaking, over the course of my lifetime, movies have gone from using CGI for elements that can’t be pulled off practically…to using CGI for elements that can be CGI’d.
And Wonderful World’s projections look like Broadway’s version of succumbing to this latter reality; they’re simply digital continuations of the practical set pieces, which easily could’ve been finished practically.
And this merging doesn’t seem to have any thematic relevance to the production.
