Never Say Die

Love Hurts contains a bit of extra-textual casting.

The movie’s raison d’être seems to be, “KE HUY QUAN IN A LEAD ROLE!!!” And this career-awareness may inform the decision to cast Sean Astin alongside him, which points to the parallels between their Hollywood trajectories:

They shot to fame in The Goonies.

Astin’s Rudy = Quan’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Dune.

Astin’s The Lord of the Rings = Quan’s Everything Everywhere All at Once.

And now, together again in Love Hurts.

Speaking of casting calculus…

Marshawn Lynch and Drew Scott feel like transparent gambits to attract fans of their brands from outside the movie world, an approach that dates back to Hollywood’s infancy.

David Leitch has become a produceteur, in the sense that his productions bear traces of his recognizable fingerprints.
