Vanya is about to offer New Yorkers a rare experience.
Filmed recordings of live productions have become all the rage this century, but they’re usually released for public consumption well after the run has ended, or at least after the original cast has changed.
But New York’s IFC Center plans to screen Andrew Scott’s Vanya next weekend…mere blocks away from where he’s currently giving the same performance at the Lucille Lortel Theatre.
Most producers would bar this close proximity, for fear of eating up ticket sales. But Vanya has nothing to worry about in that regard; it’s beyond sold out, at tippy-top prices. The decision almost feels like a goodwill gesture to those who can’t afford to be there in person.
And even for those who can, being able to compare stage to screen in such a tight timespan is a juicy opportunity.
That Andrew Scott, so juicy.
