Exeunt

What’s up with British productions staging moments in which their actors exit not only the stage, but the entire theater?

As in, they leave through house doors during the show that open to the street outside, a choice that shatters the bounds of conventional theater.

Five(!) examples:

  • Benedict Andrews’ The Cherry Orchard
  • Jamie Lloyd’s Sunset Blvd.
  • Jamie Lloyd’s A Doll’s House
  • James Macdonald’s A Doll’s House, Part 2
  • Ivo van Hove’s Network
