Stepback

Spoofs testify to the greatness of their subjects.

The latest example is Hold On To Your Butts, currently parodying Jurassic Park at SoHo Playhouse through March 15, courtesy of screen-spoof extraordinaire Recent Cutbacks. Much of the humor mines just how preposterous the original movie can be. In almost anyone else’s hands, Jurassic Park’s execution would fail to mask the sheer ridiculousness of a lot of what happens, and how.

But Steven Spielberg and Co. were such masters of their craft at the top of their games that audiences were too immersed in the cinema to take a step back and see the movie’s legion of laughable elements. Hold On To Your Butts resides in this stepped-back position, a celebration of artistic excellence that borders on the looney.

To wit, John Williams’ score is such a banger that even Hold On To Your Butts’ comical version still slaps.
