Weed in Art 2018: IN BETWEEN (Maysaloun Hamoud)

Write All Nite‘s 2018 New Year’s resolution: evaluate how marijuana is depicted in movies and theatre. For instance, I’ll praise portrayals that view smoking weed as a cognitive stimulant, and I’ll lambast those that regurgitate tired tropes about stoners. Light one up, baby!

It’s not surprising that a fiction movie with as much documentary realism as Maysaloun Hamoud’s In Between depicts toking and tokers in a perfectly realistic fashion. Throughout, characters periodically indulge in the greenery, often finding a quiet spot away from parties to imbibe, as smokers do. Or, they’ll just start lighting up out of nowhere, which is even more true-to-life for some.

In respect to the overall movie, their smoking adopts resonant significance as an act of rebellion against some Palestinians’ repressive culture of restrictive religious patriarchy. As such, the drugs serves as a sort of potent — and unfortunately very real — metaphor.

    1. HAVE I EVER. It’s hysterical, and stands as a testament to why so many people STILL have such ridiculous notions when it comes to weed. At the same time, the fact that a movie can so profoundly impact society’s understanding of a given subject is exactly why I think it’s imperative that artists nowadays attempt to shed some much-needed enlightenment on the actual reality of drugs (thus the reason I decided to start this series). Since Reefer Madness made such a difference back in the day, art COLLECTIVELY can do the same today! No one movie or piece of theatre will reach as many eyeballs as Reefer Madness did, but if more art depicted weed realistically, there can be a cumulative effect that might counter Reefer Madness’ legacy.
