Why did modern playwrights stop inserting breaks in between scenes?

Productions used to make space for down-time between each formal scene, extended pauses where the audience is given no new material to interpret, with no action in sight, no visible movement, no meaningfully staged transitions, not even a set change to observe, NADA (except maybe incidental music).

Matthew Gasda’s Zoomers at BCTR reminded me how these mini-intermissions allow for distraction-free contemplation, to take stock of what’s happened without needing to reckon with missing anything.

Why have such pauses all but disappeared? Maybe to maintain attention in the on-demand, ADD era? Or is it to maximize the sheer amount of interpretable elements?
