Conventional Contrivance

A series of cinematic echoes, starting with the voice of After the Wedding:

After the Wedding and Where’d You Go, Bernadette cast Billy Crudup as a lovingly-imperfect papa…who — IN BOTH MOVIES — happens to snoop through his respective wife’s belongings to discover a hidden stash of hoarded prescription pills. What a coincidenk! Also, married successively to Cate Blanchett and Julianne Moore, my two favorite actors in the world … lucky guy.

Where’d You Go, Bernadette‘s Judy Greer is ALSO in ANOTHER movie released recently: Driven, the SECOND John DeLoran movie of 2019, following the superior Framing John DeLorean, which plumbs the truth/artifice dilemma central to his narrative in a more compelling manner: through the truth/artifice dilemma central to documentary filmmaking. Meanwhile, Driven merely spouts — albeit in a mildly enjoyable, diverting package — platitudes on the subject, and how his life mirrors and foreshadowed the current moment. Speaking of which:

2019 has ALSO seen THREE Charles Manson movies: Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood, The Haunting of Sharon Tate, and Charlie Says. Besides being the 50th anniversary of his killing spree, both Manson and DeLoran are conmen (albeit of a different, putrid color), and I WONDER why artists might be interested in guys who duped their way into positions of power………….

Save the dumbest for last: THREE movies this year have John in their titles! Framing John DeLorean, The Amazing Johnathan Documentary, and John Wick 3.
