For Naught

Onslaught is provocation for normies.

…which a h8er could say is A24’s brand, except Onslaught is basically Saban Films albeit by way of A24.

There’s just something missing for me with Adam Wingard and Dan Stevens. It seems like they should be good, because superficially they seem good. But how much is under the surface, and how much even is there to their surfaces?

I was planning to defend the sociopolitical allegory of Onslaught’s premise…until a character blandly explains it in explicit dialogue. The fun of an allegory is considering all of the possible connections between the text and the allegorically-interpretable subtext, plus wondering about any other allegories the movie could represent. Once you state the general framework clearly and resolutely, the loss of ambiguity can flatten the layers of meaning we may find for ourselves.

Especially if the unfolding barely pushes the allegory beyond its explication.
