Could a full-length movie pull off Flesh Impact’s twist?
Spoilers.
Obviously.
In Maggie Gyllenhaal’s new short, the closing credits reveal which historical luminary Ellen Burstyn and Dakota Johnson have been playing (hubby Sarsgaard co-stars, as a director!). The combination of marketing necessities and social media may prevent a feature from copying this approach…
But can you imagine??
And now: from full length, to full price…
New York’s IFC Cinema has become the home for a short’s Oscar-qualifying theatrical engagement…but the ticket cost isn’t any lower than normal??
Counterargument: dynamic pricing based on duration is a slippery slope, as if more is always worth more…
But still.
While we’re on the topic of length…
Too many movies fall in the 90-135 minute range. A conventional runtime has a habit of breeding conventional structure, conventional pacing, conventional beats, conventional rhythm, conventional etc.
Shrinking or expanding the whole can unmoor the audience from their expectations.
Try experimenting with watching something without knowing the runtime in advance.
