A Year of Niche

2017 is shaping up to be a year of niche movies.

As I look at the best work of the year thus far, most people would be surprised not only by the size of my list but also by the very existence of its items. As the big studios keep churning out monotonous fare, art house theaters have been playing flicks that industry conglomerates relegate to these more intimate houses. This material may not be mass appeal art, but they certainly should interest people open to highly specialized and distinct forms of storytelling.

So if you’re one of those naysayers who constantly complains about the state of movies today, I urge you to seek out these diamonds in the rough, which isn’t a complete list of the year’s best but rather a selection of choices that aren’t on the radars of a majority of casual moviegoers:
