It’s been a while.
I’m having withdrawals.
Time for a re-up:
The latter half of Drake’s double album needs to be represented on this list, and this track is easily the grooviest, with striking moments of gloriously-jarring producing. *Cue the unavoidable shuffle step the 6-God’s musical and lyrical flow always induces in us uncoordinated white dudes*
Out of its fucking mind.
Straight funk.
Too much of THE CARTERS’ EVERYTHING IS LOVE sounds like Jay-Z featuring Beyoncé. Don’t get me wrong: Jay-Z is still the tits, and every song here — particularly “APESHIT” above and “LOVEHAPPY” below — is, at the very least, strong. But too many of the tracks are missing the layered artistry of this music video, which has Beyoncé’s fingerprints all over it, much more so than the actual album. Which is to say: EVERYTHING IS LOVE is more 4:44 than Lemonade, lacking the latter’s cavalcade of overnight classics.
More than anything else on EVERYTHING IS LOVE, this song is the culmination, the denouement, the resolution (for now) of Jay-Z and Beyonce’s multi-year, triple-project, unparalleled and unprecedented musical journey. My big takeaway from it? Despite being a lifelong Hova fan, even I must admit that Beyoncé has now unequivocally dethroned Jay-Z in their domestic musical rivalry.
2018’s SHOOT IT STRAIGHT INTO MY FUCKING VEINS List
