Deranging

Derangements possesses a fluidity of character and time.

The temporal shiftiness in Nadja Leonhard-Hooper’s new play is the more noticeable of the two, because years explicitly switch from scene to scene, even though seemingly no time elapses between these points in the narrative.

The character transience is subtler. Most of the actors in Annie Tippe’s production for Clubbed Thumb are double cast, yet sometimes it’s like they’re playing one person who happens to live multiple lives.

What gives?

Fluidity can be interpreted as a theme. No matter what era you’re in over the last few decades, the gender of the body you occupy will inform how you’re treated and perceived, in slippery ways that counter the impression of society’s radical progress.
