The third update to this list in May; needless to specify, it’s been a good month for music!
Chance-esque, and further proof that Kehlani should stick to features.
A double dose of Kyle, and further proof that Khalid can literally do anything. These two songs are actually back-to-back on the album, and this proximal placement puts their similarities — from the shared compositional structures, to the relationship between the gendered features, their mutual sounds, and the content of their lyrics — into conversation with each other, further proof (so much proof this week!) that Kyle put more thought into the album’s construction than most electro-crooners.
Laid-back party vibes are about as rare as…well, as finding a party you actually enjoy when you’re in a laidback mood (has that ever happened?!). This track, particularly the hooky chorus, captures the hypnotic melody of gloriously hazy nights. It’s like a lullaby for 20-something revelers happily lost in interchangeably indistinct nights on the town. When you never sleep, consecutive soirées put you into relative states of wakefulness and rest, with each lulling into the other, a process musically conveyed here.
Don’t listen without watching. Trust me.
Drake’s batting 1000 this year, but this is his only home run thus far. I’ve run out of ways to laud his ability to surround his silky-smooth, freely-flowing, very-vibey vocals with perfect productions that not only match, but fundamentally reinforce the elemental mood.
Not even 2 Chainz can ruin that beat! But the song obviously can’t compare to the last time Minaj slaughtered a group of male rappers on a feature.
Holy beat! Holy flow! Holy sex!
