Putting the Ex in Deus Ex Machina

Fallen Angels’ Maurice feels designed to be cast as a celebrity cameo.

While name-checked throughout Noël Coward’s romp — now at Roundabout’s Todd Haimes Theatre — he actually shows up late in the play primarily because the timing of his arrival in the final scene functions as a punchline, a payoff set up by his earlier mentions. Once he’s on stage…he’s not given much to do, making it difficult to convince a famed actor to sign up.

But Mark Consuelos is a platonic ideal of a fit. A sizable portion of the audience will be curiously awaiting how Scott Ellis’ revival utilizes Mr. Ripa. Despite the anticipation, 75-minutes after the curtain rises, they’re liable to be so caught up in the production’s manic hijinks that the timing of his entrance still shocks.

They finally get to see their hunk…at a wild juncture in the story.

Cue the bananas bonanza.

Reopening the Haimes with an ode to what has become Roundabout’s house style, shaped under his tutelage…

That’s how we do it.
