2018-2019 Theatre: Broadway, Power Rankings

My recap thus far of the 2018-2019 theatre season:

Today: the big Broadway finish!

Specifically:

Ranking each category of show — Musical, Play, Musical Revival, Play Revival — and then a complete ranking of THEM ALL:

MUSICAL
  1. Choir Boy
  2. King Kong
    • A trash musical, to be sure — which isn’t pejorative! Trash can be glorious! It just usually doesn’t show up at the Tonys — but not a single element of any of the musicals below compare to King Kong’s animatronics, easily one of my highlights of the season.
  3. The Prom
  4. Pretty Woman
  5. Hadestown
  6. Ain’t Too Proud
  7. Be More Chill
  8. Head Over Heels
  9. Gettin’ the Band Back Together
  10. Beetlejuice
  11. The Illusionists—Magic of the Holidays
  12. Tootsie
  13. The Cher Show

MUSICAL REVIVAL
  1. Oklahoma!
  2. Kiss Me, Kate

PLAY REVIVAL
  1. The Waverly Gallery
  2. The Boys in the Band
  3. True West
  4. Burn/This
  5. Torch Song
  6. All My Sons
  7. King Lear

PLAY

The play vs. production Tony conundrum strikes again! If these rankings were based on text alone, Straight White Men would be waaaaay higher, and the likes of Network, The Lifespan of a Fact, and The Ferryman would plummet.

  1. What the Constitution Means to Me
  2. Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus
  3. Hillary and Clinton
  4. The New One
  5. Straight White Men
  6. Network
  7. The Ferryman
  8. The Lifespan of a Fact
  9. Ink
  10. The Nap
  11. To Kill a Mockingbird
  12. Bernhardt/Hamlet
  13. American Son
